The River Vale Free Public Library is a member of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS). This consortium of 77 public libraries delivers quality library service to the general public through sharing of books and other materials, purchasing, maintaining and sharing a computer system and providing common access to the cooperative's data bases. What are some indicators of a Level T text?
Include a variety of genres and text structures
Chapter books are long with few illustrations
Readers need to recognize symbolism
Texts contain many sophisticate, multi-syllable words that readers will need to analyze in terms of both literal and connotative meaning
Reader need more prior knowledge of political and historical events and about the problems of different culture and racial groups
Themes include growing up, demonstrating courage and experiencing hardship and prejudice
How do I know if my child is a Level T reader?
Automatically read and understand characteristics of most genres, including biographies on new topics, fantasies, chapter books, shorter informational texts, mysteries, series, books with sequels, short stories, diaries & logs, and myths & legends
Read longer texts with many lines of print that requires the reader to remember lots of information
Use strategies to figure out difficult words
Look for information in pictures, photographs, maps, charts, etc.
Can break words into syllables
Read silently for the most part
Use what they already know to understand a text
