Level H

What are some indicators of a Level H text?
  •  Language is no longer repetitious

  •  Full range of high frequency words

  •  Size and placement of print varies widely

  •  Some repeated episodes

  •  Content moves away from familiar experiences

  •  Genres include realistic fiction, fantasy, folktales and nonfiction

  •  Characters tend to learn and change

  •  Picture support is used to enhance and extend meaning as well as arouse interest

  •  Story events require interpretation

How do I know if my child is a Level H reader?
  •  Read longer text with more challenging vocabulary

  •  Use various techniques to read difficult words: using letter/sound information, thinking of familiar words and 
     taking apart words

  •  Begin to read new books silently

  •  Read aloud without pointing at words

  •  Automatically read high frequency words (come, came, from, her, him, his , one, out, said, saw, she, that, their,
     there, they, was, went, were, with)
