English As A Second Language

You can change a life by becoming

a volunteer tutor!

Since its 1987 inception, the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at the River Vale Library has grown into an award-winning community service of the library involving volunteers that have made a significant difference in the lives of over 700 members of our local community. The ESL Program tailors its tutoring to the specific needs of the student. These needs include adult basic reading and writing, preparation for the GED and TOEFL tests, becoming a citizen, obtaining a driver's license, grammar and conversational assistance and a better understanding of American government and culture. Displaying amazing diversity, the students come from all walks of life - male and female, old and young, educated and non-educated, from various countries throughout the world. Besides earning the gratitude of eager students, being a volunteer tutor and helping individuals in need will provide its own personal enrichment and reward.

POTENTIAL STUDENTS: If you are interested in becoming a student you must be a resident of River Vale or a resident from one of the towns with membership in the Literacy Volunteers of the Pascack Valley: Dumont, Emerson, Hillsdale, Mahwah, Montvale, Paramus, Park Ridge and Ramsey.

POTENTIAL TUTORS: If you are interested in becoming a tutor in the library ESL program, more information can be found on the Literacy Volunteers of the the Pascack Valley website: www.literacyvolunteerspv.org
